Variety
and breadth of experience have been a hallmark of the choir
and every two years or so stage shows have been produced.
As well as entertaining enthusiastic audiences these have
allowed choir members to develop stagecraft and musical skills.
"Alice" was performed in Perth Grammar School on
4th and 5th March 2009

"The
Mermaid" was performed at Perth Academy on 1st, 2nd and
3rd April 2003. The Fair City Singers found their fins
and finery as the renowned young singers were transformed
into sea creatures, bad fish, bad boys and royal guests.
The
lead role of Oriana was played by Colleen Nicoll from Dunkeld
who, despite the Queen's objections found her handsome Prince
in Jenny Manson.

Craig
Rose from Bankfoot was the fearful Sea King who was enchanted
by Grandmother Mer, in the stately form of Catriona Steele.

Mr Dolphin, the Master of Ceremonies worked wonders for a
ten year old while Verity Cox, in her final year in the choir,
starred as a spiteful Sea Witch, commanding all the creatures
of the sea.

The
production took place in Perth Academy on April 1st, 2nd and
3rd 2003. Thank you to all those who came and supported the
talented local children.
In
March 2000 the Fair City Singers presented the acclaimed
childrens’ rights musical ‘Thursdays Child’. Every night was
a sell-out and press reviews were enthusiastic. It was performed
in Perth Grammar School Theatre.

In
1989 the UN General Assembly adopted the UN Convention of
the Rights of the Child. This human rights document lays down
basic rights and standards for children’s lives to help protect
them from the cruelty, neglect and exploitation which sadly
exist in many parts of the world today, especially those in
times of conflict.

UNICEF
is named in the convention as an agency which will help countries
meet these standards and provide services for all those under
the age of 18 years. Thursday’s Child was created as part
of the UK Committee’s mandate to raise awareness of the UN
convention and the plight of children in many parts of the
world. Written by Greg Snape, it is set slightly in the future
in any country, and follows a group of children as they struggle
to escape from a labour camp in a conflict zone to find a
better life and justice. During Thursday’s Child you see vivid
illustrations of the need for the various articles in the
Convention.

The
success of this production was due to a fusion of these young
singers’ talents with the skills of Christopher Neal (director),
Peter Twyman (choreographer), a full stage, lighting and sound
team and of course the Neilsons. Many other individuals and
organisations contributed behind the scenes and we gratefully
acknowledge their support.
1998
saw a beautifully atmospheric performance of the moving ‘African
Madonna’ set in St Ninian’s Cathedral in Perth. This was directed
by John Thomson who was a founder member of the Fair City
Singers.

In
1997 ‘Alice’ was a sell-out success at Perth Grammar School
Theatre.

The
Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ in 1994.
African
Jigsaw’ was performed in 1992.

'Robin
and the Greenwood Gang’ in 1991.
Their
first show was ‘Hip Hip Horatio’ in 1990.
